What our customers say about their holidays

'Could do better' in short.
The location is great with lovely views onto the beach and down the coast. The cottage is fine in terms of room sizes and design. It was basically clean and tidy. However, it was let down by simple things. The garden was a mess with uncut grass, nettles and weeds. The paper lampshade in the sitting room was broken - really obviously broken to any cleaning team. The cutlery didn't match. When you sat on a dining room chair it would buckle slightly because a bolt was missing. There were no cooking trays, just an enormous roasting pan. There was no kitchen scourer when washing up that roaster after cooking in it. The Freeview didn't work. The double mattress needs changing. And - yes - I suppose this does all sound a little overfussy, until you combine them with the general tiredness of the decoration, marked carpets and a lack of any form of 'welcome pack'. In general terms, we enjoyed the location but don't feel encouraged to return to this accommodation, which is a shame because these are all simple things to get right. We tend to use Sykes Cottages because they achieve a certain quality of accommodation but this one doesn't reach that standard. A few practical points. The beach is lovely but the walk up and down isn't easy. The driveway down to the cottage is not the best for someone worried about their low-profile tyres. There needs to be some system in place for parking between the cottages on the site; there was no direction as to where to park which, although not an issue for us, could easily lead onto problems which might spoil someone's trip - tempers might get frayed!

The actual property itself was good, very sweet.
What let it down was the cleanliness. We are aware itâs a dog friendly property which our dog came down for the second half of the holiday. What you donât expect is to sit on the floor with our baby to realise the rugs and sofas were thick with dog hair. The property was dusty with cobwebs all down the backs of the bedroom units. There were hairs in the Bath, sink and the shower. What made it worse is that the owner came to see us, realised we had a dog (it was a last minute thing my parent in laws came down for the second half) and proceeded to tell us we needed to pay £30 charge. I explained how we had to get the hoover out as it wasnât cleaned before, to be told not worry on the charge as their hoover broke while cleaning before we arrived. To then get a call when we were back to say we didnât leave it in an adequate state. Even though we washed and put every piece of cutlery away, stripped the beds like we were asked to (which when paying for them to clean it I donât see why we should have to) and folded all the duvets up neatly. So would I recommend this place? No is the short answer, and if you do make sure you take photos of how you leave it as we felt she was very sneaky and actually embarrassed we told her how bad it was. The lady also baked us a cake for arrival and the irony is the joke of the holiday was it was a nice touch but would of been better to have a clean property!!

The main picture of the cottage is, in fact, a photo of the owners' cottage.
Colly cottage is round the back - much less pretty and a very misleading picture. All of the other photos portray innacurately tidy, clean and ordered rooms - in fact, the living room was cluttered with further random pieces of furniture as was the upstairs bedroom. We were fascinated by the TV stand which was full of books and facing the wrong way. The stuff portrayed hanging on the walls has been replaced with tackier hangings. Everything was dusty round the edges and the oven stank of burnt meat juices whenever it was used. The owner, without letting us know, let himself in to adjust the shower while we were out leaving dirt and what I think was glue residue on the floor of the shower. His wife, at one point, simply tapped on the door and walked in with a 'hello.' To drive out of the gate was simply risky as in both directions, it was impossible to see traffic coming - had a couple of near misses with tractors. Worst for us was that it was situated on a working livestock farm, a fact that is not mentioned in the blurb about the cottage and a fact that would have meant we'd not have looked at the cottage as we are vegans.

The property was nice but it could do with a good dusting.
Especially behind the cupboards in the sitting room. I had to get the hoover out and use the nozzle to suck up all the cobwebs behind the cupboards. Also around the pictures and I had to dust the electric heaters. My son bumped his head on the kitchen door ways, above the bath, the archway upstairs and the bedroom with the step. There are no âmind your headâ signs. The uneven floor was not mentioned or I missed it in the description. But my granddaughter found it difficult going up and down the large steps. Shes only 18 months, and I was so worried sheâd fall and crack her head on the tiled floor. The rubber seal in the washing machine was black with mould when I wiped it because it was smelling. Talking of smells, the cottage on entering smells damp. And the porch could do with a clean and lick of paint because thatâs your first impression. I have pictures to go with my feedback. Thank you

The location and views are fabulous.
The house was lovely and warm but the whole place was VERY tired. The photos online must be extremely old or photoshopped! Inside and outside all vey worn. The whole place and the other holiday lets all looked a mess. The house was clean, but as it's so worn it still looked a bit grotty. One bedroom had a huge stain on the rug which was so unnecessary, surely a new rug wouldn't cost much? When it rained hard we had water coming in above the lounge doors and we had to put towels in to stop the drips all night. You could see it's been happening a while by the state of wall disintegrating inside. The double bed was the worst I've slept in and we go away a lot. Most of the blinds were broken and you could see next door was the same. Overall a great location but very disappointing accomodation. I didn't expect that from Sykes, everywhere else we've stayed has been lovely.
