What our customers say about their holidays
Keith - Verified booking
This small house is pleasant, reasonably well furnished and best of all, in a quiet country location; a bit of a ghost village actually, and a mile inland from the sea in Aberporth.
It lies in the grounds of an expensive hotel where drinks at the bar might require a mortgage ! Unfortunately, when we arrived, a wheelie bin at the front door was overflowing with 6 or 7 weeks of rubbish stinking like a garbage dump. We complained and it was emptied 5 days later. Arriving after a 3 hour 30 minute drive to the property, we needed the loo. There was no toilet paper or kitchen roll provided. We complained and were directed to a shop which was a drive of 7 miles return. We had to buy our own loo paper and even our own salt and pepper. There were none of the normal âhospitalityâ items - a few tea bags, coffee sachets, milk or anything else. Better introductory hospitality would only cost a pound or two. On day 1 the bathroom door jammed & could not be opened. The door lever/latch was not working. We spent 5 minutes crashing into the door to open it. Finally it gave way without damage. Since we could also have been locked into the bathroom, we stuffed a toothpick into the latch to keep it open until it is repaired. The availability of an adequate wifi signal was sporadic and slow. We could not use the catch-up TV and during the whole week I could only open my emails on my mobile phone. When it is working the internet speed is 29 Mbps. The property was devoid of instructions on e.g. the television or heating system, or when the rubbish is collected. There were no recommendations on local walks, shops or restaurants etc. (Tesco/Aldi in Cardigan). We like to keep a holiday let very clean, but there were no cleaning materials supplied. The good news is that following previous poor reviews the double bed mattress (firm) and the microwave have been replaced. Unfortunately when I removed the instructions from inside this new microwave in order to use it, they slipped down between the side of the fridge and the worktop. This does not prevent the microwave being used. Since the freezer compartment needs defrosting, when the fridge is turned off to do this, they can be retrieved. (Incidentally, when I logged in to the Sykes website, this property was not registered on my account, although 7 or 8 previous ones are still there).

Our group was 7 adults, an 8 month baby and two lively retrievers. Ty Nant coped with all our needs, it was better than we could have hoped. The garden was ideal for the dogs as it was totally enclosed and sitting in it in the morning was wonderful listening to the birds singing and the brook babbling and we made use of the hot-tub - an extra, but worth it. The beach was a short walk away down a hill. Inside the house, was loads of living space. A high-chair was provided for the baby, together with a cot and stair gates (all free) which were key in preventing the dogs going upstairs as well as preventing the baby from falling down the stairs. The bedrooms were roomy with plenty of hangers supplied, draw space was also excellent. The two en-suites and a further bathroom made morning ablutions very easy with no queues! The kitchen was well supplied and we were delighted that there was enough crockery and cutlery to have more than one meal. Many places provide only as many crockery or cutlery items as the maximum guest capacity of the house. Our group agreed that this house deserved 5 stars plus out of 5. It's position is superb it is very well equipped, even down to towels and seat protectors for the dogs to cuddle up on the sofa without doing any damage. In the whole week we could not think of anything that we missed in the house.

Fern Cottage in Aberporth is lovely, offers nearly everything you need for a great holiday.
The house is nicely decorated, and included all the facilities most people would need to make an enjoyable stay. The safe enclosed garden is a superb extra. The fact that no where in the village is that far to walk is also a real bonus. We did have some problems with the shower head (needs a new fitting to make it stay upright) but we were able to still use it during our stay. It might also be worth the listing stressing to anyone booking the cottage that the short walk up and down the hill to the beach/ local pub/car parking area might cause some people with mobility problems or families with small children an issue. We were okay with this but with no pavements and a reasonably steep hill to walk up we would expect anyone arriving without knowing this might be surprised and it could ruin their stay (although they ought to be aware before booking they are holidaying in scenic Wales) It's a shame that there are still regulations around the previous visitors book as we have been on UK cottage holidays for over 30 years and always find these a first stop in arrival as they are a very useful addition to help quick navigation to best places to visit/eat/shop in the area we are staying. Our stay was so enjoyable it left us knowing we will be booking to stay in that area again in the future.

The cottage was not clean when we arrived.
The problems were as follows: The cleanliness problems are as follows: - Black Dog Hair on Floor - Black Dog Hair in Bath - Black Dog Hair on Childs High Chair. - Floor Generally Filthy (Daughters Clothing on the Knees and legs went from White to Brown in 2 hours) - Dust on Lampshades collected with hair. - Dirty Bowl left under Sofa. - 5 Dog Poos left in the Garden (we checked when we arrived) - Crockery requires a clean before every use. More general problems include: - The shower Head does not retain its position. This is an easy fix. - The shower Shelf is Broken. This is an easy fix. - The drawer in the Kitchen (R of the Dishwasher) is broken. This is an easy fix. - There is Black Mould/Damp in the Master Bedroom which is where the cot is. This is noxious and needs to be dealt with and not hidden behind furniture. We told the owner and they had the cleaning company contact us. The cleaning company made 1 slot available on Monday which was not possible as they demanded we not be present in the cottage at the time and our 1-year-old knaps between 0930 and 11. They offered 1000. I was not prepared to spoil her day so I did a full clean myself on Sunday morning.
