What our customers say about their holidays
Roy - Verified booking
This property has been renovated to the highest possible standards.
Itâs simply fantastic. Weâve just returned home from 10. Superb nights. We always look for minimum four star, preferably five. This is by far the best property weâve stayed in in the UK. Katey and her family live two minutes away, and are super helpful. Nothing being too much trouble. There is off-road parking for a minimum of 4/5 cars The lawned garden wraps around the property with a table and a seating area and a barbecue area. The views from the garden are fantastic, uninterrupted panoramic views of all the open countryside. The best view is to the west where you see the forest and the hills, and itâs relaxing, watching the sunset On entering the property through the front porch to the left of the hallway is the large kitchen diner and lounge To the right of the hallway is the downstairs double bedroom which is of a good size next to. That is a brilliant utility room with plenty of space for storage and a spare fridge. Next to that is the downstairs wet room which is six star. absolutely fantastic with the rain shower with attachment, wash basin and WC Upstairs there are two double bedrooms both are good size one being twin beds thereâs a shower room with rain shower and attachment basin and WC. The main bedroom is an excellent size with an ensuite consisting of bath, rainshower attachments above wash basin and WC. All fitted to the highest possible standard. The beds are extremely comfortable. The property is a great position to explore County Durham with all the wonderful history and scenery. We will definitely return Wishing everyone happy holidays. Cheers.

Overall, this is an excellent cottage with gorgeous views, both from the living room and the kitchen (hello alpacas!
). It was a great base for a week in Sep 2024 when we were very lucky to have very hot, sunny and summery weather! Do recommend the Stanhope Agricultural show (and others in the area if you visit in September). We also really appreciated the YouTube video showing how to approach the cottage - no issues at all for us with good parking for 2 cars (i20 and a Yaris). Top tip: read the manual provided to know how to switch the oven on! We appreciated the different coloured towels for the different rooms, and loved the main shower. The kitchen is much larger than it appears and is a wonderful place to hang out with your family and friends. We loved the American fridge freezer! We loved the size of the TV though worth noting that we could not find live TV channels (guessing that it is due to the rural location?). Good selection of games and books too. The niggles we experienced are easily resolvable with a higher standard of pre-arrival housekeeping. We found white dog hairs on the dining room chairs, the freezer drawers were not pristine (unlike the fridge) and the oven was not clean, meaning it was very smoky. We also experienced some toilet roll anxiety as we were left with only 4 for a party of 5 for an entire week, so we would recommend more being left! Another minor annoyance is that the plates/bowls etc. do not easily fit the dishwasher. Nothing worth contacting Sykes/owner about during our holiday but wanted to mention this as an easy area for improvement. I would have no hesitation in booking again - the fire was a lovely treat on the cooler nights.

Our group was 5 adults, a 3 year old and 2 dogs.
The property was absolutely perfect for us in terms of size and layout, allowing for the dog owners to take the downstairs double bedroom to be near them overnight. The enclosed garden was a great bonus for dogs and kid, but our chosen weekend was on the cold side so I'm sure we'd use it more in the summer months. We had a great welcome to the property and found everything we needed once inside for cooking etc. The owners left a great pack with local info and tailored recommendations for our child, as she had called us to check who was coming and how old they were. She had also left lots of toys and some children's bowls/cutlery etc which meant less to pack in the car. The contact with our host was great and she was always on hand to answer questions. The place is nicely decorated and very clean. The beds were very comfortable too. In terms of local area, we visited the vast Hamsterly forest numerous times for dog walks, never seeing the same part twice. The riverside walk from the visitor centre was perfect for our 3 year old and included lots of playgrounds and a Gruffalo activity. Fish and chips from Miners Munchies was nice (cash only) and we visited a couple of localish pubs. Despite the cold we had the most amazing skies with expanded views over the hills. I'm sure we'll be back in the future, maybe in the summer months next time!

We spent our family Christmas here, and we were extremely happy.
The surrounding area is just stunning. Miles of green, a view of horses from one window and alpacas from the other. The property is dog friendly, they provided dog towels and bowls. There is a porch on either side of the house so you can dry off the dogs without dragging mud in. If you do however they leave you very well equipped with hoover/mop so you can keep it clean. This might be the best stocked rental we have ever stayed in. Knowing we were cooking a Christmas dinner we brought our own oven trays, yorkie trays, etc but we neednât have, it had everything we could have possibly needed and more. The oven was brilliant and the fridge and freezer were more than ample for our Christmas food and drinks. On our drive there we remembered we forgot our firestick, so we could watch Christmas films on Christmas Eve, didnât need to worry about that either, the TV was a smart tv and had excellent WiFi. The bedrooms were more than big enough, and the shower pressure, well I miss it already. We made plenty use of the wood burner in the front room and the stocked games cupboard. There was simply nothing missing from our stay. It was very clean and we hope to come back.

A lovely cottage in a peaceful area.
Bolt's View was a great base to explore the beautiful North Pennines. Very good for walkers with numerous options for walks from the door. The cottage had very comfortable new sofas (not the Chesterfields shown in the photos), quality mattresses, there was plenty of space and storage and a good shower in the main bathroom (we didn't try the one in the en-suite). There was a good size smart TV with Netflix & other apps etc. Be warned that the floorboards in the twin room are extremely noisy if you're a light sleeper! If you're bringing a dog it's worth noting that the outside space, which is terraced, is not accessible directly from the cottage. It's across the lane that runs at the back of the cottages so you would need to supervise your dog when letting it out. The only thing we felt could be improved upon would be the addition of some garden chairs that could be moved around the garden as it would have been lovely to have been able to sit on the bottom terrace. We would stay again and also recommend.
