What our customers say about their holidays
Keith - Verified booking
This small house is pleasant, reasonably well furnished and best of all, in a quiet country location; a bit of a ghost village actually, and a mile inland from the sea in Aberporth.
It lies in the grounds of an expensive hotel where drinks at the bar might require a mortgage ! Unfortunately, when we arrived, a wheelie bin at the front door was overflowing with 6 or 7 weeks of rubbish stinking like a garbage dump. We complained and it was emptied 5 days later. Arriving after a 3 hour 30 minute drive to the property, we needed the loo. There was no toilet paper or kitchen roll provided. We complained and were directed to a shop which was a drive of 7 miles return. We had to buy our own loo paper and even our own salt and pepper. There were none of the normal âhospitalityâ items - a few tea bags, coffee sachets, milk or anything else. Better introductory hospitality would only cost a pound or two. On day 1 the bathroom door jammed & could not be opened. The door lever/latch was not working. We spent 5 minutes crashing into the door to open it. Finally it gave way without damage. Since we could also have been locked into the bathroom, we stuffed a toothpick into the latch to keep it open until it is repaired. The availability of an adequate wifi signal was sporadic and slow. We could not use the catch-up TV and during the whole week I could only open my emails on my mobile phone. When it is working the internet speed is 29 Mbps. The property was devoid of instructions on e.g. the television or heating system, or when the rubbish is collected. There were no recommendations on local walks, shops or restaurants etc. (Tesco/Aldi in Cardigan). We like to keep a holiday let very clean, but there were no cleaning materials supplied. The good news is that following previous poor reviews the double bed mattress (firm) and the microwave have been replaced. Unfortunately when I removed the instructions from inside this new microwave in order to use it, they slipped down between the side of the fridge and the worktop. This does not prevent the microwave being used. Since the freezer compartment needs defrosting, when the fridge is turned off to do this, they can be retrieved. (Incidentally, when I logged in to the Sykes website, this property was not registered on my account, although 7 or 8 previous ones are still there).

The one good thing about this property is that the garden is far more enclosed than expected.
So the dogs could be watched but didn't have to be kept on a lead all the time. However that is where the good things stopped. The property is very damp, as a family member suffers from asthma we considered going home early but having travelled six hours to the cottage decided to stay for the majority of our booking. To minimize the problem we had to keep the windows fully open night and day whenever we were in, which unfortunately meant the VERY loud road noise woke us early every morning as the cottage is maybe thirty feet from the roadside. Also the advertised Sky TV is no longer connected, the satellite dish is hanging off the wall and you are limited to Free-sat - but because the wifi is so slow that it is practically non existent, there is no means to stream any TV shows. You have to watch live or not bother. I too ran a speed test which came back as 25 Kbps maximum ie 0.02Mbps which reminded me of the early 90's. We would have brought a DVD player with us had we known, as Amazon Prime or Netflix or any of the terrestrial catch up channels just wouldn't work. We eventually used our mobile phone as a, "hot spot" to be able to check emails but as we don't have unlimited data that was about it. As the sofa has no cushioning whatsoever and needs to be replaced you wouldn't want to sit too long anyway, it is like sitting on a church pew. We did contact Sykes and sent them a photograph of the black mould on the, (unnecessary) bathroom curtains but have never had the courtesy of even a reply. Lovely area and we are back in December but we won't stay at Panteg again.

Lovely house which was exceptionally clean.
Ideal location in Cardigan - less than a minute to walk to the nearest cafes and shops. There is street parking outside which is handy for arrival and departure but the swimming pool car park was very useful as you can buy a weekly pass (£14.60 not £10.50 as listed in the description but still a bargain!) and there were always plenty of spaces. The swimming pool has closed down. Plenty of storage in the kitchen. Lots of things supplied by the owner should you need to borrow anything you've forgotten eg beach towels, picnic blanket, reading glasses. Lounge and dining area comfy but possibly a little small for our family of 5 (3 adults and 2 older teenagers). Sofa and armchair extremely comfy but the last one there missed out and had to sit on the bench seat (on the photos it looks like a sofa but it isn't) Bathroom on first floor a good size but no lock on the door. Bedrooms on this level were cosy but all had good storage and were very comfortable. Large bedroom on the top floor also comfortable. Lots of clean, attractive decor in all rooms which made the property even more homely and attractive.

Perfect! We loved everything about Penywhelp House.
It was quaint but spacious and cosy, very clean and very good valve for money. It had everything we needed, the owners had thought of everything right down to fire-lighters for the log burner. Wales wasnât the place to visit for the weather in April there were thunderstorms and lots of rain, when it was sunny and warm back in Yorkshire. So for a couple of days we just sat with the dog by the fire watching the snooker World Cup, then nipped over the street to the dog friendly pub in the evening which did amazing food by the river (especially Sunday lunch). The village of St Dogmaels is very picturesque, with an old Abbey, coffee shop, fish & chip shop, post office and convenience store, it is very community focused and friendly and even has a community pub!. The famous local produce market is held on a Tuesday morning - not to be missed. Just a mile or two up the road from the cottage itself is a lovely little beach with an amazingly high quality beach hut cafe. All in all both the cottage and the location couldnât have been better and we intend to visit again next year.
