What our customers say about their holidays

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Buccaneer Cottage, (2 couples).
The house was clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Even though we travel with everything including food and drinks, on our arrival it was nice to see a welcome pint of milk in the fridge and also a small box of biscuits. The property was well placed within the marina/harbour, lovely views and sunsets on an evening, even better views from the attic bedroom. We were very lucky to have good weather for the full week we were there. The harbour has an excellent fish and chip shop (Bennetts) which was only a 2 minute walk - absolutely delicious and plenty of them! There were ample pubs and inns serving food with plenty of outside seating areas (although we didn't try them) and Afternoon Cream Teas to be found everywhere! Asda was only a ten minute walk if you didn't want to take the car. An easy stroll in to the town centre with a good selection of shops, from the harbour front and across the bridge (5/10 mins at the most), and another 5 minutes to the beach. In the opposite direction was Nothe Fort and the lovely Nothe Gardens with lots of squirrels, carry on a little further round the coast and you come to Newtons Cove, looked lovely for swimming and with views across to Portland. We had some lovely dog walks around the area everyday. Also plenty of places to visit by car if you want to go further afield. The only negative issue was the renovation work going on at the house next door starting early morning, disturbing my parents who were in a downstairs bedroom. However, we were advised of this when booking so can't really complain, it didn't spoil the holiday and will be finished soon.

Overall, the location of the property and the surroundings were absolutely wonderful.
We had a lovely welcome during the early part of our stay. Our dog appreciated the welcome biscuits, that was lovely little detail. A previous holiday maker had complained about a sticky door in their feedback so it was good see that it was noted and acted on. Overall the cottage was beautiful and felt really homely and relaxing. We did find the zip together beds were uncomfortable for two people, there was a big dip in the middle, maybe it needs a topper. The bedrooms were lovely though. The furniture the design and overall comfort was excellent. Overall cleanliness was very good, however as soon as we went into the property I dropped something under the sofa and there was a lot of dust and hair. The facilities were great. We would have liked more crockery and glasses, just enough per person is unworkable. More serving dishes and bigger/ wider dishes for the oven were needed. There was a lack of cleaning things/ foil/ clingfilm. We have stayed in similar accommodation where they seem to have thought of everything. The TV in the main room was too small and too old, no/ very limted smart TV functionality. This is the UK and you are not going to be outside all the time. These things did impact on the comfort. These are minor points that we hope are helpful. It was obviously a wonderful holiday as my partner booked again for his family and thry are going this week.

Thank you for a lovely stay in Buccaneer Cottage.
It was lovely and warm when we arrived on a very cold March evening. It was very nice that milk, tea, coffee and biscuits were provided. The facilities were adequate. We brought our own towels, tea towels and hair dryer, dishwasher tabs. If we stayed again, we would also bring some cleaning materials as there were none at all. The beds were very comfortable and the bedding good quality. It was also surprisingly quiet at night considering the bedrooms were on the ground floor and the property in such a central location. Our sleep was not disturbed once. Not even afternoon naps⦠As mentioned, it was lovely and warm on arrival but too hot for us to sleep. We turned the heating down at the boiler but then couldnât turn it up again the next morning. However, when we called the office they were very efficient and effective in sorting it out. Weâd like to say a big thank you to them for that. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a well behaved doggy. Our 1-year-old whippet Ellery loved his daily visit to the Nothe squirrels and crows which provided a fab opportunity for some prey drive desensitisation!! He also loved the seaweed!! We would be happy to come again. Thank you Kim & Derek

Firstly the property is in a lovely location and has lots of character.
Let's get into the nitty gritty - the shower in the ensuite in the downstairs double was covered in grime like it hadn't been cleaned for about a year, it had a toilet brush with excrement running down the sides and encrusted on the brush, the carpets smelt of wee and had big patches on, the walls had big patches of crusty paint and dirty hand marks, the blue chair upstairs smelt Victorian and of cigarettes, some of the furniture is falling apart. We went to Sykes office and showed them photos where they told us it wasn't acceptable and they would be contacting the owner. We then sent a complaint and have been told that ' the mess was made by us, we left the place in a state and left a fish in the microwave (this was accidentally a fish and chips box regrettably). If I could put the photos on here you would see that the grime and excrement were not made in a day and the disgusting attitude of these owners is appalling I will now be taking the matter further to accuse us of the mess they have neglected is appalling - avoid like the plague unless you want to catch the plague from the apartment.

Thank you for the welcome pack - much appreciated.
House was in a good spot, perfectly placed for our Coast Path walking. It was just the right size for three sisters, and easy to warm up. Kitchen better equipped than some larger houses we've stayed in. Bus stop on the road right outside the complex was really useful. When we had an issue with finding the light switch (!) the Sykes out-of-hours respondent was super helpful - thanks. A couple of things would make it even more comfortable: There's a strong smell of dog, which must be fairly constant given the Febreze provided. If you got rid of the throws on the sofas, it would help a lot. We didn't use the bigger sofa at all as the smell was so strong. The mattress on the small double is the squeakiest I've ever encountered. A folder of info about the house itself - eg. how the cooker, microwave etc work, would be more useful than the Lyme Bay generic folder. In fact, we were confused to find that the house is managed by LB Hols when we'd booked via Sykes. I'm sure there's a good reason, but it would be good to be told. Thanks.
