Dog Friendly Derby Holiday Cottages

Sitting on the banks of the River Derwent, Derby is rich in creative culture and history. The town played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution, and this heritage can be experienced at the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, located at the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Friendly and with a vibrant seasonal calendar of events, there's a variety of bars and nightlife, combined with atmospheric architecture such as the gothic Derby Cathedral overlooking the city.

At Dog Friendly Cottages we want your pup to be part of all your exciting holiday adventures. That's why we specialise in dog-friendly cottages in Derby and across the UK. Searching for a spacious home where the extended family can catch up? Or, maybe you're after a cosy bolthole with a hot tub and a log fire for some indulgent relaxation. Whatever you need, you'll find an inspiring selection here.

Our holiday cottages in Derby are perfectly located to make the most of the Midlands. Whether you're taking a short break or an extended stay, there's plenty to do. From wild swimming to walking through picturesque Hope Valley, there's something for everyone.

Best dog-friendly locations in the Midlands

With an array of inviting towns and charming villages in the centre of England, it can be quite a challenge to make your pick! Here are some of our most popular dog-friendly destinations in the Midlands.

Best things to do in North Derbyshire

From tram rides to hillside climbs, these dog-friendly attractions are some of the best around.

The Roaches

Location: Leek

Best for: Great walks and cycle routes

The rugged ridges of The Roaches offer the perfect day out for keen hikers and their hounds. From the top, you'll experience incredible views of the verdant valleys below.

Dog-friendly pit stop nearby: Visit the local pub, The Lazy Trout for an excellent selection of real ales and yummy pub grub.

Chatsworth House

Location: Bakewell

Best for: A relaxed day exploring the mansion and its grounds

Between the magnificent stately home and the 105-acre gardens, Chatsworth House is certainly a sight to behold! Dogs can enjoy the gardens too, provided they're kept on a lead.

Dog-friendly pit stop nearby: Visit The Stables within the grounds of Chatsworth House for an indulgent afternoon tea!

Thornbridge Hall Gardens

Location: Bakewell

Best for: Brushing up on your horticulture!

The Thornbridge Hall Gardens have been open to visitors for almost 100 years, with over 12 acres of beautiful garden displays. Dogs on leads are always welcome on the grounds.

Dog-friendly pit stop nearby: Treat yourself to a delicious Sunday lunch at the nearby White Lion.

Crich Tramway Village

Location: Matlock

Best for: Enjoying views of the Peak District in comfort!

For a day off from walking, take a ride on a traditional tram at the Crich Tramway Village. It's a nice way to explore the nearby towns, and dogs can ride on the trams with you for free.

Dog-friendly pit stop nearby: Enjoy a local ale at the nearby Cliff Inn, featured in the Good Beer Guide!

Black Rocks

Location: Wirksworth

Best for: A good walk through picturesque woodlands

Black Rocks is an area popular with climbers, but it offers plenty for dog walkers too. At the summit, you'll enjoy great views over the Matlock Gorge that rival some of the best in England and Wales.

Dog-friendly pit stop nearby: After a busy day, warm up by the open fire in The Ragley Boat Stop.

What our customers say about their holidays

On arrival to Orchard Cottage we were greeted by Rosemary who welcomed us and showed us to the property.

The interior was lovely and clean. There was a little welcome gift of milk, bread rolls and some shortbread biscuits which were so thoughtful and appreciated. All cleaning products were stocked, which was great, as other properties we have stayed in didn't provide a lot of things. We didn't have a four legged friend with us but can see why it is perfect if you do. The grounds are ample enough for any dog to exercise and we saw plenty of people walking their dogs in the local area. As others have stated the beds are very comfortable. The only improvement we can suggest is that the instructions for the heating are made available to the guests. I know we asked once for the temperature to be turned down (and it was) but it was still too warm. There are plenty of pubs in the vicinity to try if you don’t want to cook yourselves, however, one word of warning if you head to The Bubble Inn – our experience was awful (and if we had checked other reviews rather than be taken in by the look of it on the exterior we wouldn’t have gone). We had to wait well over an hour for food which only appeared when we asked where it was. The food was actually tasty but not overly warm.

We had an amazing week at Clovermead Cottage.

The cottage is beautiful and in a lovely location. It was a lovely surprise to arrive and find the owners had left milk in the fridge and some lovely biscuits. The house is very well equipped and the added bonus of a wide selection of sports equipment in the garden was a huge bonus for our children, tennis and badminton, basketball and croquet were all enjoyed during our stay. There was also a good selection of games for all ages and the owners kindly added hungry frogs to them for our boys to use during the stay. The house has a beautiful outlook and from the decking/lounge we spotted lots of wildlife highlights being a barn owl, buzzards, bats and long tailed tits who were busy on the bird feeder in the garden. The owners are lovely and gave us some tips on places to visit. Markeaton park nearby is a fantastic place for families. There is so much to do nearby we will have to come back as we couldn't fit it all in to one week. Thank you for a fabulous time the boys were in tears and sad when we had to leave as they'd enjoyed it so much.

    Enjoyed our stay at Clovermead.

It had everything we needed and everything worked fine, although it was a little old fashioned in some respects. But it was cheaper than some other holiday lets with similar facilities. It had a nice LG 48” television in the lounge that looked fairly new. There was a good sized garden area at the back which was enclosed, so we could let our dog run around off lead. There were a few steps down to the garden from the decking terrace, so it may not be possible for a disabled person to get down to the garden. There was quite a bit of traffic noise from the nearby A50 road. The bungalow is near the owner’s house, which is just outside the village of Findern down a narrow road. We didn’t walk far along this road as it and the grass verges were quite muddy (although we saw others walking their dogs there). We were there in March, so it is probably much nicer in the summer. It was a nice place to stay while we explored the surrounding area.

We stayed at Clovermead Cottage the week of 30 Dec for the week.

We were out and about visiting family so the cottage was mostly used as a base for sleeping, breakfast and general getting ready and we were then usually out until the evening. The cottage was as described - warm, clean and well looked after - so we’d recommend it. We also met the owner Rosemary who was welcoming and friendly and who left some bread, milk and biscuits for our arrival. Overall a pleasant stay - the only thing to look at is that on one night when it rained the noise of the rain water pattered quite loudly outside the main double bedroom patio door. It was possibly water from the guttering (or rolled up canopy above the door) that was collecting and then splashing onto the veranda so it woke me up a few times. You can hear traffic from the A road behind but it doesn’t disturb you. Overall though we’d recommend the cottage as a location for exploring the general area.

The cottage is small but cosy.

I was warm without the central heating on, and the occasional blast from the electric fire. Beautifully clean and great modern furnishing. The kitchen had everything I needed along with a pint of milk in the fridge. The bed was super comfy and clean and the bath was amazing!!! I liked having real plants around too. As other people have said, the cottage IS on a main road, which can be noisy, but only at certain times. I was able to pull up outside to unload (the kerb is dropped there), and parked a minute walk away. The picture of the bus stop was a brilliant marker when I arrived!!! The stairs in the cottage are quite steep and curl round quite sharply, so if you are a bit wobbly on your legs, it might be harder to get upstairs, but there is a solid handrail, and also a grab handle at the top to keep hold of. Overall, a really lovely stay with some good walking in the Peak District.
