Your dog will love a cottage holiday in Derby
Sitting slap-bang in the middle of England, Derby is a dog lover's delight. Not only do you have a historic city to sniff your way around with your four-legged friend, but hop in a car and within minutes you’re out in the wilds of the Peak District, England’s oldest National Park.
Urban pups and city-slickers will love the pedestrianised Cathedral Quarter, so there are no worries about car fumes or noise (especially if your dog is a little nervous around traffic). However, it’s the city’s parks and open spaces that are really welcoming for dog lovers, with acres of play areas to explore and plenty of new friends to meet!
Derby dog-friendly holiday cottages make a point of welcoming the whole family, including your dogs, so you’ll find cosy beds and their very own water dish as part of your room deal. It’s easy to get out and enjoy the glorious countryside that surrounds this delightful city. Staying in Derby also puts you close to some dog-friendly hotspots too, such as Bakewell (although bear in mind that if you’re going to tuck into a delicious Bakewell tart then you’ll need to take some doggy treats with you too, as almonds can give your pup an upset tummy).
Dog-friendly things to do
Derbyshire is walkies heaven, with miles and miles of footpaths, dog-friendly gardens and parks, and trails across the stunning Peak District. Here are a few of our favourite spots to check out during your holiday:
Elvaston Castle, Elvaston
This award-winning county home is surrounded by over 320 acres of open parkland – that should be enough for even the most energetic hound! Make sure you pop into the café for one of their amazing homemade cakes.
Allestree Park, Derby
Right in the centre of the city is a spacious public park that welcomes dog walkers. You might have to duck the occasional flying golf ball from the neighbouring course, but head here early in the morning and there’s a chance you might see the occasional brown hare frolicking around.
Monsal Trail, Peak District National Park
Get your walking shoes on for this 8.5mile trek through the countryside that’ll take you down dale and through the spooky old tunnels of the Midland Railway Line.
Crich Tramway Museum, Matlock
Take your pet on a walk back through time with a visit to this dog-friendly transport museum. You will need to keep your pup on a lead, but they’re bound to get lots of attention from the dedicated museum staff who run this charming spot!
