Dog Friendly Cottages In Hartington

Nestled in the Peak District, Hartington is a picturesque village surrounded by green field and miles of untouched National Park. With easy access from Derby, Nottingham and Stoke-on-Trent this pretty village is just the place to base yourself while soaking the joys of the Peak District.

The walking opportunities surrounding Hartington are some of the best in the Peak District, with excellent cycling and rock climbing also available. The lovely River Dove can be found nearby and if you're hungry after a day of walking there are several pubs, tearooms and cafes to enjoy in this village. Although cheese is no longer produced here Hartington had a long history of cheesemaking and the 'Old Cheese Shop' is certainly worth a visit before leaving.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Mark - Verified booking

The Gate House is certainly unique & was immaculately presented & a true credit to the owners considering its popularity in bookings & usage over the seasons.

We had a lovely week in Oakamoor, the cottage does have everything you need plus some nice little extras that we haven't found in other cottages which certainly didn't go unnoticed by us. The garden is lovely to sit out in, listening to the babbling spring which serves as an excellent wine cooler & the visiting robins that are almost tame. As mentioned in the cottage details pets & small children would need to be supervised due to the low front wall & the spring & uneven surfaces around the garden. We took our dog & there are numerous walks from the door down the disused rail tracks & the lovely parkland area opposite the cottage. We thought we would support the local pub, the Cricketers Arms as they are finding it hard to survive nowadays. The reception at the pub was reminiscent of the pub scene in the film "American Werewolf in London" & I was half expecting to hear "The Bad Moon Arising" in the background. We didnt stay for a second drink & stuck to the road on the way home & luckily didn't encounter a Werewolf. It appears to be a local pub for local people. They are missing a trick there as they could turn it into a theme pub & rename it the "Slaughtered Lamb", and next year Rodney they would be millionaires. One issue we brought to the owners attention was the mattress on the double bed which was past its sell by date but Karen the owner said that it was already in hand to be replaced. In summary we had a great week at the Gate House & the locals we met were very friendly. We would certainly revisit in the future.

    A review of two halves.

The Love Nest is an ample sized 2 person property on a complex of other holiday lets. The maintenance guy, is super friendly and an asset to the complex without a doubt. The Love Nest is quirky inside, but this has overshone practicality. There are no internal doors, so privacy is not an option. The main room housing the bed and lounge area leads straight into the bathroom without a door, which means at night you are woken with the bathroom light being on should you need to use the toilet. The toilet doesn’t have a door either so you will “hear” your partner in there as no soundproofing, the curtain to draw across is un hygienic , you pull across to give a little modesty but having using the toilet means you touch the curtain before washing your hands after. Not hygienic at all. The bath is modern and sleek but super slippy, be careful, I slipped and found it un relaxing at all. For safety I would provide an anti slip mat, I’m not old and found this a hazard. We used the swimming pool and games room daily, a great addition to the complex, but does need some tlc. Overall, I would return but some adjustments to Love Nest are needed. I can’t comment on the other properties, but they looked nice.

A delightful stay at The Gate House.

Opening the door and stepping into The Gate House was enough to know our week here was going to be perfect. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas and the New Year. It's an incredibly unique building with a fascinating history. The quality of the interiors with appropriate decor and furniture is lovely. The kitchen has excellent facilities with everything provided. A large fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher are perfect additions. Fantastic bathroom with quality fittings and a super shower. The cottage is extremely comfortable with a relaxing lounge and comfortable beds The garden is a great size with plenty of room for parking, the intriguing tunnel is fascinating. It is also extremely secure for a dog, which is perfect. The cottage is perfectly located for many walks from the cottage. And within short car journeys of plenty of this areas attractions. If you are looking for the perfect cottage to return to after visiting all of the places this beautiful part of England has to offer, I would have no hesitation in recommending The Gate House.

The Love Nest is a nice idea, but not very well executed.

While aesthetically pleasant, it lacks basic amenities (no firewood/kindling for the fire, no sponges or cloths for the sink etc) and isn't particularly practical. If you need to use the bathroom at night, you should take a torch because the lights will blast straight into the bedroom unobstructed as there is no door (just a cast-iron gate), and the toilet is divided by a curtain with no light of its own. The bathtub itself is rather dangerous without a bathmat too; you can realistically only get one person in the middle over the plug as laying back is essentially impossible. The outdoor lights were on for the whole night, and while I will credit the owners for sorting that out upon notification, it left us sleepless the next day. Negatives aside, the owners were very apologetic for our complaints and wanted to offer other options for accommodation, but we cut our stay short on the first night of four. I can speak for the sincerity of the owners, and hope they venture to refine this property.

Even though the garden is small, the picnic area opposite the property is big enough for children to play games and ride bikes.

It is opposite a cycle path with no traffic that allows access to Ramblers Retreat, Alton Bridge pub and Denstone farm shop. It is an unmade path with pot holes so not suitable for beginner riders. Toilet is downstairs via a very steep staircase, this may be a concern with younger children. Ours soon got used it. The "lean to" at the back of the house was excellent to keep two adult and two children's bikes with space for all the muddy wellies. Kitchen is extremely well equipped with everything you need to cook. A proper American fridge with plenty of space for all the holiday treats. Tea, coffee, milk and wine on arrival to help you settle in. Modern smart TV with access to most online television applications. Plenty of books to keep you busy on any wet afternoons. Rudyard lake narrow gauge railway is just 20 mins away. Alton Towers 5mins away.
