Whitby is a walker’s paradise, with loads of dog-friendly routes nearby. Here are some of our favourites:
- Cleveland Way – this long-distance trail passes right through Whitby. Head north to Sandsend or south towards Robin Hood’s Bay for a dramatic coastal walk.
- Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay – a stunning 7-mile walk along the cliff tops. Be aware of livestock along the way and keep dogs on leads where needed.
- Mulgrave Woods – a magical woodland near Sandsend with streams, ruins and seasonal wildflowers. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on the lead.
- North York Moors National Park – head inland for heather-clad hills, wide open spaces and plenty of off-lead opportunities.
Best dog-friendly beaches near Whitby
Whitby is ideal for beach-loving dogs. While some areas have seasonal restrictions, there are plenty of sandy spots nearby where paws are always welcome.
- Tate Hill Beach – this small, sheltered beach in the harbour is dog-friendly all year round. Perfect for a paddle or ball game.
- Sandsend Beach – just north of Whitby, this scenic beach welcomes dogs year-round at the far end.
- Runswick Bay – a short drive away, this peaceful cove is dog-friendly all year and has a gently sloping beach ideal for a splash.
- Robin Hood’s Bay – this charming village has a dog-friendly beach all year round, as well as pet-welcoming pubs and cafés.
- Staithes Beach – a small but scenic beach where dogs are allowed all year. Ideal for rock-pooling and coastal strolls.
