What our customers say about their holidays

Galena is a lovely old cottage in beautiful rural surroundings, very well modernised, with three huge and comfortable beds in the two en suite bedrooms and third bedroom with bathroom two steps away.
It's secret extra ingredient is in the micro details the owners have deployed - almost every little nice-to-have extra thing you wish you had in other good cottages is actually already in place in Galena. This ranges from kit to make young kids comfy to kit for your dogs, and adult tools. For example really good kitchen equipment, from a range of good oven trays and saucepans, kitchen knives that are actually sharp, a coffee pod machine, right down to small wooden tongs with which to pick toast out of the toaster and little plastic bag clips. Throw in an efficient log burner, with a good supply of logs to make the living room toasty, and it's a real home from home. The views from the kitchen and bedrooms are spectacular green vistas of fields, farms, dry stone walls and distant hills, while the cottage is surrounded by amazing Peak District heights, view points, roadside rivers and plunging valleys. There's no shortage of good pubs and cafes within a very few minutes' drive. But what I enjoyed most in our stay at the end of March was the magnificent tree blossoming right outside the back kitchen window, full of songbirds from blackbirds to so many beautiful little blue tits, goldfinches and others, filling the air with their music. ...and the sheep! You can't miss the sheep grazing peacefully on the slope just above the kitchen window, a few feet behind the cottage's dry stone garden wall, as you graze on your own breakfast. My wife and I and two other couples of very old friends have been hiring lovely cottages together for an annual break for about 15 years, not to mention family holidays, so have plenty of experience. We all agreed Galena Cottage was one of the very best.

It was a pleasure to stay at Ivy cottage for a lovely (if rainy) week.
The cottage is thoughtfully appointed with lovely personal touches throughout - the owners have carefully left many notes with helpful instructions to guide the guests. Three points of note; a) I might recommend that prospective guests be alerted as to the very 'full' nature of the gardens, which do impede access to the front of the cottage with large suitcases. From the roadway to the conservatory entrance, the foliage does over grow the walkway, which made navigation of our luggage a challenge. Since we are from abroad, and travelling for a month, we did have many larger suitcases - perhaps Sykes might consider some form of check-box on their application form to alert the owners to the fact that renters are coming with luggage as such - ? b) We were a little disappointed to have renovation workers begin construction work on an adjoining cottage at 0615 on our final Saturday morning, using the adjoining walkway to gain access around back of the property. The early morning hammering and cartage was a little alarming so early in the day. A gentle chat with the neighbours might avoid this for the next guests. c) a note on the booking form for Ivy Cottage noting that the Pub is 'closed' for the foreseeable future would have been helpful. One filter I rely upon when booking a cottage from Canada, is the close-location of a Pub. Since the 'Quiet Woman' is not open, that might have been good to know. The Royal Oak is nearby, but not really within walking distance. The Pub in Crowdecote was also closed when we walked over High Wheeldon....a similar disappointment. Otherwise, it was a happy and restful week at a lovely cottage in a wonderful region of the UK.

We really enjoyed our holiday at Ivy cottage.
Set in an ideal location in a quiet village, made it easy for us to access all areas of the Peak District, with Buxton only a 10 minute drive away, and plenty of walks on the doorstep. The property was well-equipped and full of unique items of furniture which added a personal touch. There was enough space for 5 adults to relax comfortably throughout the week. Only 2 minor points to highlight: as mentioned by other visitors, the garden is somewhat overgrown and it was difficult to navigate at times, especially to the various seating areas. When it had rained in the night, getting to and from the gate without getting wet from the plants was a challenge. However we do appreciate that trying to maintain the garden during high season must be a challenge. The second point to note was the downstairs shower which we were unable to use as, as a family, we are generally above average in height. Again, we appreciate that it is an old cottage, with low ceilings, but found that, unless you sat in the bath, the shower is better suited to children than adults. These points aside, we had a very enjoyable, relaxing holdiay and would recommend it to friends and family.

This is a quite fantastic cottage - a really lovely place to stay.
A really quiet village with all of the Peak District nearby - but close enough to Buxton for shopping (and even, we discovered, pizza delivery). The owners have done absolutely everything possible to make it a home from home. The kitchen is very modern, perfectly equipped ... good beds ... log stoves ... perfectly clean (or as clean as a cottage like this is getting) ... extra everything you could need. Thereâs a thoughtfulness about their preparations and communications that made the whole stay pretty much flawless including the milk and a cake on arrival. Even the random artworks around the place, are lovely, the DVDs, games and jigsaws exactly what youâd want to find in your own home. 3ft thick walls make the WiFi a bit flakey in places ... but you know what ? ... thatâs kind of an advantage. If youâre looking for a quiet, easy stay this is just perfect. Much more like staying in a friendâs holiday home than a rental cottage. Owners are absent and invisible (always good IMO) but helped us out when we left some things behind. Possibly the best cottage Iâve ever rented. Thanks

We had a good week at Galena Cottage.
The kitchen is well equipped and we appreciated the welcome pack. Good location with walks direct from the house. Itâs well placed for the Monsal Trail and places in and around Buxton. We would recommend asking for an earlier take over time in winter so you can get settled in daylight. The cottage was difficult to find as the cottage sign was unreadable and locating the key box might be difficult in the dark and access tricky. We arrived in minus temperatures and thick snow, and had to dig out the drive to get the cars in. A friendly neighbour lent us a spade as the one in the garage was broken and not up to the job. The house was very cold when we arrived but once the heating was on the cottage apart from the kitchen was warm and cosy. The kitchen radiator did not heat up at all making the kitchen far too cold to sit in for meals initially. Fortunately the maintenance team told us how to solve the issue - by turning off a bedroom radiator. Iâd recommend ringing them if any problems are encountered as Margaret was helpful and friendly.
