What our customers say about their holidays
Alan - Verified booking
When we booked way back during 2017, we booked both the East and the West Barns at the same time!
One was for the EAST Barn which we took at Xmas Time when we had a very enjoyable experience - nothing to do with it being Xmas time, see our review which is currently posted on your website and couldn't really have been bettered. The second booked - WEST, is the one we used during the week just ended during June and although one might say that they are broadly similar, being adjoined, but nothing could have been further from the truth. I shall endeavour to explain the differences which was to cause us a fair few difficulties during the week and proved to be a serious disappointment. *That said - all things other than for what is contained in the following explanation - were on a par with our previous experience during our stay at Xmas in the EAST Barn, so would definitely give 10 out of 10 for the rest. Major differences:Bedroom - pretty much the same in layout (Minus the Bathroom) but the Bed was smaller and much less comfortable PLUS - there was an overlong "step down" from the bedroom to the corridor leading to the living room area. The Bathroom isn't En Suite and doesn't have any extractor Fan and one has to fiddle about in the dark looking for the lightswitch before entering - and this is emmediately after stepping down from the bedroom. *We preferred not to leave the light on all night - this shouldn't have been required anyway. Being rather long in the tooth, having dodgy knees and being a tad unsteady on my feet, plus Diabetic to boot, my numerous trips during every night resulted in numerous trips and falls during the course of the week. On return journey from the Bathroom, even though the "step up" is indeed rather high compared to the norm, I appreciate that much younger and fitter people might comment on this but manage it as fit people would - and get on with things. I only mention this as a precaution - would recommend that you could perhaps use this as a caution to aid the unwary when booking. We would definitely consider a return to this venue - but NEVER ever book the WEST again, it would always be the EAST should we ever return. The East living area is much more open and spacious and has a Larger Dining Table. To summarise - The Venue and the hosts were as excellant as on our previous visit, cannot be faulted. The WEST Barn leaves a little to be desired and proved a disappointment. The EAST Barn - see my previous posting after our stay at Xmas 2017 - Brilliant!!! Sorry this review couldn't have been positive for our stay this time around. Best wishes Alan & Sue K

We stayed at Lavender Lodge and arrived to find a welcome basket with an assortment of tea, biscuits and cherry wine.
The facilities were first rate and included a freezer, washer/dryer, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, tea towels, cleaning products and even an iron and ironing board. All the rooms were a good size and the cleanliness was excellent as was the level of maintenance, the decorating was to a high standard as was the choice of furnishings. The outdoor space was big enough to stretch out on and it was fully enclosed which was great for keeping the dog from wandering off, although he spent a good deal of time sitting stock still and eyeing up the peacocks that strutted around the grounds. With regards to the location, you are surrounded by trees with the gothic spires of the Rushpool Hotel visible through the foliage. There is a lovely wooded walk which makes for a pleasant first thing and last thing dog walk. Just down the road from the main entrance (turn right and it's just before the island) there is a public footpath that will take you down to Skelton Beck and from there you have a massive choice of paths to take you into Saltburn-by-the-Sea and/or its gardens. In the coffee table drawer you'll find a good variety of pamphlets showing you what activities, attractions etc. are available to you locally or a bit further afield. As far as any cons to this holiday lodge are concerned... the Rushpool Hotel specialises in hosting weddings/receptions and so you can expect some noise from parties, but it was never excessive and it never went on too late. And that's it really apart from wanting to cook something in the oven and being Aga users we were a bit stumped until we had a look through the Grey Folder of Knowledge and found instructions. We would highly recommend a stay here if you are looking for a well presented, clean and fresh lodge in quiet, wooded surroundings with plenty of things to do in the surrounding area.

This cottage was very disappointing.
It had absolutely no atmosphere and was not at all homely. A rug in each room would make a good addition to make the place look less like a box. It certainly wasnât furnished to the high standard as described by Sykes, but was furnished with very basic items from IKEA. The sofa and chair in the living area were extremely hard and uncomfortable as was the mattress which was so soft you could both feel and hear the springs when you moved. The pillows had some kind of inner protector which made it sound like you were sleeping on a packet of crisps. The 2 pull down blinds in the bedroom do not stop the light coming in and as there are lights outside each door it is difficult to get off to sleep. Black out blinds would improve matters. We only had contact with the owner when we arrived and she had to go into the next cottage to borrow their pint of milk. On entering the cottage, we found a packet of Blue Riband biscuits which we thought was a bit mean after reading some previous reviews and compared with other greeting gifts we have received. We also found she had provided just 1 toilet roll. There was no toilet brush which one would have expected, the cold-water tap dripped constantly and the toilet seat moved when sat on. In addition, the grassed area at the rear needed cutting so as to make it usable. The owners mowed the grass on their own private pitch and put course to the front of their house so it would have been nice to have had the small area of grass behind the cottage mowed. In conclusion, this is the first time in 50 years of holidaying that we have been asked to strip the bed before we left!! What on earth do they do between the departing guests leaving at 10am and the arriving guests turning up at 3pm. Judging by the number of cobwebs everywhere, not that much. We will not be returning.

We loved our stay at Lowdale Barns West.
A spacious cottage for 2 in a quiet setting surrounded by countryside and within easy reach of the coast and the Yorkshire Moors. Tastefully furnished, and one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in. Almost everything we could have needed was provided and we were very pleased with the welcome pack and other extras left for us - the bottle of Prosecco was a lovely surprise! The underfloor heating kept us cosy and was easy to operate, as were all the kitchen appliances. If we were going to be picky, a mop and bucket would be a good addition to the cleaning materials (which were otherwise excellent) to make it easier to quickly clean the floors, especially as we have a dog. Overall, we were pleased with the cleanliness of the place, though there were quite a few dust bunnies under the bed! One other slight issue was the temperature of the water in the shower, which we got the hang of eventually but was never what you would call hot. However, this was a minor niggle and we were sad to leave to come home. We'd definitely stay there again.

This as we expected is a small for two people farm barn conversion next to a very large mansion house who were no doubt the owners.
It is a clean and tidy cottage with basic facilities (enough for two) but as we expected no washing machine. The bedroom was cosy and the bed comfortable in King size and area quiet day and night. The views from the backside of the cottage were good with an outdoor table and two chairs for the nicer warm days. The doors on either side of the cottage are full glass frames so privacy is an issue and you will at most times need to keep the blinds closed. There are no side windows only two roof windows for lighting. The TV works well but you only have freeview and a basic DVD player (not blue-ray). All in all Sleights is a great place with all the local amenities with a chippy (great), post office, butchers, small supermarket and Plough pub. Access to the cottage is via a single track farm road through sheep grazing fields. Its not too muddy just a bit bumpy so take it easy. But be warned for the sporty HO-HA henrys with flashy low level cars you find access difficult unless you want your exhaust ripped out.
