What our customers say about their holidays
Mr Jenkins - Verified booking
On a positive note, the overall look and presentation of the cottage is good. The bedroom upstairs for a child is lovely and the style of the decor is very nice. Before booking I thought the cottage looked good but I was concerned about the ‘parking on the street’ description on the site as my wife suffers from chronic fatigue. I telephoned Original Cottages to check. The staff member assured me the parking was available on the street directly outside the house with a parking permit. Unfortunately there is no parking on the street at all and then you have to move the car as it is all double yellow lines and very narrow. We spent the first evening of the holiday hunting around Whitby for a space to park. We had ended up paying to park in a car park but it only lasted until the following morning when we would have to move and look for another space. The system of where you’re allowed to park and for how long is relatively complex and if you get it wrong you get a parking fine. There seems to be no leniency for this if you get it wrong. The parking remained an issue for the whole holiday and really marred the experience for me. Our neighbours were given a car park permit with their booking so they had a guaranteed place to park. My main issue is that the parking is not accurately described on the booking page and if it was I wouldn’t have booked this cottage. The cottage is basically a back to back but reversed so your only door (front door) opens onto a communal space for 6 or 7 houses. The downstairs is pretty dark and very much overlooked by neighbours but the upstairs does have a lovely view that peeks over the neighbours roofs to see across the bay. Many of the double glazing window units are blown and filled with condensation but this doesn’t detract much. There is an enclosed outdoor space for the cottage with a gate so ok for a dog. The outdoor space doesn’t seem to be cleaned and would benefit from it. It’s great to have 3 toilets but unfortunately the shower room has no window and was a bit smelly due to the lack of ventilation. There was black mould in the shower around the seals and drain area. The drain seemed partially blocked and the shower tray kept filling to overflow unless you turn the shower speed down. The cleanliness looked generally good at first sight but when moving a couple of things to find power outlets I noticed a lot of dust and dirt. The TV was a good standard and other appliances ok except for the cooker (Beko) which was poor and took about 3 times as long as it should do to cook food (and then not evenly). The WiFi speed is very slow, around 12mbps. Netflix buffered a lot due to this. The 4G/5G signal is about 5mbps downstairs but better upstairs or outside. The shelf under the tv has been broken and is hanging off the wall. Chimneys next to us are lower as they are further down the hill and smoke was coming into our house giving me a sore throat. We stayed in July so I’m not sure why people were using fires but of course it’s worse if you want your own windows open. We found our bed uncomfortable with a strange rough bed sheet although the rest of the bedding was fine. I could feel the mattress springs when lying on the bed. The other beds seemed fine. All problems aside we did like the house and the location. The parking was especially bad though and I feel the description on the booking site is quite misleading. I wouldn’t visit again, nor would I recommend it to a friend. The cottage is charming in many ways but not a restful place to holiday. I know my review is somewhat negative but I have tried to be balanced based on our experience.

I'd struggle to find a better located cottage of this size in Whitby.
There aren't many that can sleep 4 adults in king-size beds with three decent single beds. I've thought hard before leaving this review. We've had a good holiday. But given the cost of renting the property I'm not happy with our stay. Full admission that I didn't try to work out minor niggles with YCC or the owner. I only dealt with one issue that was dealt with by YCC, I didn't want to spend any time on a holiday trying to sort out small things. Like many people, time is a precious commodity. First impressions weren't great. Outdoor access to property slippy and strewn with litter from neighbouring cottage. When we arrived, we could not turn any lights on, as the power to all off them was off, so the first thing we had to do was find the fuse box to get the power for them back on. The property smelt strongly of wet dog. Photos in listing need updating as some areas looking very tired. Because there must have been a power cut, the electric oven would not work, so we could not cook anything. The guidebook helpfully explained that if this happened you had to reset the oven by pressing the plus and minus buttons together. However, there was no plus button - presumably broken off by a previous guest and not replaced. One of the blankets on the beds should not have been placed back on - it stank and was covered in fur. At least one chipped knife and several cracked or chipped glasses. Windows need a clean, shower seals hanging off, missing tooth brush holders, chipped plaster. Outside area on roof has changed from photos and is looking really tired, awning didn't or doesn't work (and is filthy). The coffee maker listed was a cafetiere. So far, so minor, and all things I was happy to overlook. It is a good property. Some issues have been caused by previous visitors, but unusual for them not to be addressed. The reason for the low rating is that we found evidence of mouse activity our first evening. In several locations. It was confirmed on the second evening when we caught one. We actually saw several in and out of the large laurel in the neighbouring property. It's an old property. It's not an easy one to resolve given where they're coming from. Mice will get in, and heavy rain will drive them in, I'm not unsympathetic to that. YCC/sykes dealt with this very quickly (especially grateful for this at the start of a two week stay with three under 4s) but the general maintainence and cleanliness would help with this (air brick in patio area maybe needs a mesh cover which we didn't spot until our last few days). This is my first disappointing experience with sykes, so while I would consider using them again, I'll be a lot more cautious in the future. I wouldn't stay in this property again, sadly.

This property was fantastic!
The house itself is much larger than we expected. Everything you need is in the property with the exception of a mop. Beds are really comfortable and towels provided were quality. Shower in the en-suite and main bathroom were both powerful which is always a bonus. Upon arrival we did have issues finding our parking permit due to previous guests not leaving it behind ( not the owners fault) but we contacted the owner who had a parking scratchcard delivered to the door within 20 minutes of first contact so we were really impressed. We couldn't find any info about bin collection days in the information folder but it was emptied on Thursday morning I believe. The house is literally a few minutes walk away from the harbour and there's a Herons and poundland within a few minutes walk which is ideal for supplies. We tried most takeaways within the local area and all were really nice. The pub is literally over the road and I believe dogs are welcome although we never went in ourselves, it always sounded busy when passing. We took two dogs with us and took them everywhere with us so the lack of any outside space wasn't too much of an issue until one day it rained all day and we were really mindful that we were in someone else's home that they clearly love and spent most of our day trying to stop them wandering anywhere that might get marked from wet paws and coats when returning to the property. My only issue with this property was that the doors to outside areas can be difficult to lock/unlock at times but considering they are all natural wood it is to be expected. Overall I would recommend this property to anyone that wants a clean, comfortable and well maintained property to relax in when not making the most of the local area. We hope to return some time in the not too distant future.

The Cottage is located in the heart of Whitby, being an excellent location to explore the Town and undertake walks on the Beach to Sandsend and the Abbey. The Cottage itself is perfect and provides ample space for four adults. It has all the mod cons and amenities you require. The only negatives I have are as follows: Albeit directions are provided, it is still not particularly easy to find. When pulling up outside in a car, other Cottages are marked, but Sirmonds even when walking through the passage. The Property details are not very clear with regards to the winding climb upto the garden. We took my elderly parents, who remain mobile, but if they had of been on there own would have struggled with the climb with their cases or shopping. To the rear of number 4, the drain is blocked and overflows generating a sewage smell. When walking up to Sirmonds you need to walk through this water. It is not a problem being caused by Sirmonds, just an adjoining holiday let, which needs addressing. What I would say, these are minor points and I would recommend this cottage. Allan

Overall it was a nice property in a good location and it was well equipped. I have scored less than full marks on "comfort and quality" due to issues we had with the heating thermostat and boiler during our stay. We reported this to Emma the housekeeper who gave us a workaround with the thermostat - as on entering the property for the first time we found it to be too hot and the thermostat not responsive in reducing the temperature. She separately had to return another time to reset the boiler when it had stopped working and we awoke to a freezing cold house and the boiler displayed a fault code. It is disappointing that it appears that these are known issues and it did adversely affect our stay a bit. In other respects, Creamery Cottage was very good, with high quality furnishings and kitchen equipment. The rooms were comfortable and it is a smart, modern house. However, we would probably book somewhere different if returning to the area - due to the heating issues we experienced.
