What our customers say about their holidays

  • Gill - Verified booking

The cottage was beautifully furnished, warm and comfortable but the lack of housekeeping stock and the ‘house rules’ did not give an overall welcoming feeling of relaxation or luxury holiday.

For example - no detergent for the washing machine (in the countryside, wet muddy walks, in winter?), peppermill was empty, torch batteries flat or low, no spare toilet rolls, single small discs of packet soap in bathrooms with no refills, a single replacement bin liner only, outside shed bulb not working. As a pet friendly cottage, comments such as ‘Obviously dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture’ and ‘there must be NO evidence of dogs left in the property on vacating’ feel quite disrespectful to guests and assumes the worst of them. The 9am checkout is early and difficult to rationalise particularly when the guest is expected to do most of the tidying. To be packed up, beds stripped, house ordered, had breakfast and on your way, under the threat of leaving not a single dog hair, by 9am on the final morning makes your last day a very early start and/or takes up much of the previous evening. Things like this detract from what could have been a really enjoyable and relaxing stay. Whilst we appreciate all prices have increased, the cost for ensuring usable items are well stocked and refilled should be a reasonable inclusion to the overall cost. The cottage is not cheap and for this tariff, we really would not expect to feel penny pinched and unfortunately it engenders a degree of dissatisfaction. Initial supply of logs is as stated in the description, but again, refills require a car journey to stock up and in our experience cottages of this cost and marketed as luxury would have extra logs on site and available. The village pub is excellent and well worth returning to, the location is good for local attractions, walking from the door is good if without wanting to let your dogs off lead but requires walking across a lot of sheep fields or the road to get to better dog suitable walks. Overall a very lovely property but not the luxury relaxed holiday ambience we were anticipating. Lots of positives but definitely some areas to reflect on to improve the user experience or expectations

Squirrel Cottage was a lovely comfortable base for us to explore the more northern areas of the lakes, and we had a lovely stay. It’s relatively small but very cozy and perfect for the three of us and a fluffy one. We’ve visited the lakes for many years and stayed in various cottages and lodges but this has to be the most well equipped accommodation we’ve ever stayed in, right down to having a step for our little girl to reach the sink, and a bean bag for her to relax on after busy days out! We arrived late and hadn’t had chance to get the basics in so when we were greeted with thoughtful items such as Prosecco, eggs, bacon, bread, milk & biscuits we were very grateful. Things like kitchen foil, washing up liquid and shampoo aren’t usually provided in self catering accommodation so these were pleasant surprises too. Parking was sometimes a problem getting a space on the road in front of the cottage but the village had other places to park so wasn’t too much of an issue. Lots of really nice places to eat nearby; The Sun, Pooley Bridge Inn and Ullswater Inn. I’m aware the owners are new to holiday rentals but would be good to get a visitor book for future visitors to leave ideas for days out, places to eat, etc… we’ve always enjoyed reading them in places we’ve stayed before and find them extremely useful. Lovely castle right on the doorstep too so be sure to visit Greystoke castle before you leave. Really enjoyed our stay :-)

Rayside looked appealing in photograph and we were not disappointed once inside.

It had a really welcoming homely feel and and it was easy to relax from the outset. The little welcoming touches were very much appreciated including a surprise Easter egg, litre of milk, and tea / coffee tray. I was delighted to find the kitchen so well stocked with cleaning products, accessories and so on, and was able to cook our Easter Sunday dinner easily. The decor upstairs was also welcoming and homely. We all slept really well, as the location is so peaceful and the beds very comfortable. The bedlinen and towels were clean, soft and of high quality and the bathroom was ideal for us all (good shower and lovely warm floor!) The back yard was a great space to allow our dog to roam and keep her feeding / water bowls and we made good use of the freezer. The instruction guide you left was extremely helpful and we literally did not need for anything further during our stay. The location of the cottage is really well sited for accessing so many areas of the lakes easily. We spent our days walking around Grasmere then Ullswater and were blessed with fantastic weather throughout. In summary, we couldn’t have asked for a nicer break.

A lovely cottage in a quiet location.

The villagers were very friendly and helpful. The cottage was very well equipped and the kitchen had everything that could be needed. The supply of tea, coffee and sachets of milk were appreciated as the Post Office/store closes at 2.00pm. Groceries can be ordered for collection the next day. The owner took the trouble to contact me to make sure that I knew where to find the electric fan as the weather was so hot. We travelled by train so it was important to us that the buses stopped near by. The buses run hourly but because the route is from Penrith to Workington, they are sometimes delayed. Dogs are allowed in the area outside the pub but not inside. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel did allow us to take the dog inside, for which we were grateful as the heavens opened while we were enjoying our meal. Overall, the cottage had a homely feel and had everything that we needed for an enjoyable holiday.
