What our customers say about their holidays

We stayed here in August and because of the Covid situation we were expecting a superior standard of cleanliness.
Unfortunately that was not to be. The grey furry venetian blind in the kitchen was actually white underneath the grime. The cutlery tray in the kitchen drawer had an accumulation of dirt in the corners. The fridge was stained inside. The lovely fireplace in the bedroom contained someone else's rubbish. Other issues we found were the kitchen window wouldn't open. The toilet seat was loose. The shower room door wouldn't lock because the lock had been fitted incorrectly. The garden although enclosed was unsuitable for a dog. There was a rockery at the end and a dog could easily get on the wall from that. On a positive note the property was well equipped, the bed linen and towels were good and the location was ideal. There was a second room upstairs which we found very useful for storage and drying clothes. These issues and others have been raised with Sykes Cottages and the owners so hopefully they will be rectified. Having recently looked at the description of the property on the website I can see that it has now been updated by Sykes.

A bit disappointed with location and description a bit misleading.
The courtyard at the back of the cottage is not suitable for pets as it is completely open and not very suitable for sitting outside unless u want to look at next doors car and an old shed? The pictures lead you to believe that you can enjoy a cup of tea whilst admiring the view but that is far from accurate. You need a car to get around as Shap is quite remote and nothing to do during the day, although there were a couple of public footpaths so some nice walks but not enough to keep you busy for a week so had to drive in to Kendal most days and Windermere which is definitely worth the drive and a must as is Bowness and Ullswater (Poolley Bridge). Cottage itself was well catered for but really nothing extraordinary and if Iâm totally honest Iâve had much better for less money so I feel it was quite expensive for what you got. But we did have a pleasant stay just donât get your hopes up because I was expecting a view of the scenery but you canât see any of the views at all from the cottage.

Firstly when you find the place, what can only be described as offload is the only entrance in or out so be aware if you have a low car or low profile tyres.
When we got there the lodge is in garden next to a wall with residential homes directly over the wall. Inside us big enough 2 bedrooms are decent sizes. I didn't feel the place was clean enough windows are filthy with old bird poo crust in. Bathroom fan is extremely loud , the toilet seat is loose and no lock on the door. Unfortunately when we finished ironing one day the socket came straight out the wall this caused a mild shock. Another safety concern was the ramp access, this has very slim anti slip strips that have expired and when wet is very dangerous. And finally got charged £150 for paw prints and what looked like a stain spilled tea? Could have been there already.. I wouldn't recommend taking a dog for this reason and also very dangerous access road . Never stayed the full 4 nights left a day early. Very very disappointing especially after saving and now £160 taken straight off a card and into overdraft. Worse holiday ever

Lovely lodge in a nice quiet location.
Our dog loved watching the rabbits and hens playing near the pond, with the occasional red squirrel making a visit. The lodge was nice and clean. The kitchen was stocked with everything you'd need for self catering, more than usual for other lodges, which was a nice touch. We were welcomed with a couple of complementary drinks in the fridge. Only downside is there are what we think to be mice venturing into the roof or wall cavities. Every night between 11-3am we were woken up to loud scratching and gnawing noises in the ceiling above the bed. One night in particular it continued for about an hour, it sounded as if something was attempting to gnaw its way into the room, I had to resort to knocking the ceiling with the sweeping brush in the hopes of scaring it off, I even popped outside to to make sure there was nothing on the roof, whatever it is sounds determined to get in, as it kept coming back.

This place should be available on prescription as a cure for the stresses of life.
The location was perfect for exploring the Lakes from the coast to the top of the highest mountain in England. There is quite literally everything you need in the lodge which was spotlessly clean and thoughtfully organised. The welcome pack of milk, but juice, wine and beers was a nice gesture too, t The lodge is situated at the end of the site, so no cars are passing, ensuring plenty of privacy too. In addition, there is the pleasure of watching the cheeky red squirrels that turn up throughout the day to feed and scamper about just outside the doorway. Although the weather was not great when we stayed, the lodge is well located to explore other attractions and near local shopping for food or for dining out. We are already planning to return as we felt so at home there.
