What our customers say about their holidays

  • Paul - Verified booking

Lovely little cottage in Little Langdale.

For the price it was good value and we were appreciative because we had booked it last minute. The location is good for exploring the local walks and hills such as Lingmoor. It also was very well located for some great mountain bike routes that I am familiar with. Well equipped kitchen. Beds were very comfy. Useful bike store which just about squeezed two mountain bikes. A few small points that could easily be fixed: I would ask that the owners get a new TV. The TV appears to be over 10 years old and is a bit small and with poor sound quality. In my view there is no excuse for this at all. Please also get more crockery. There is a full size dishwasher so it could easily fit 3 meals worth. Having only 6 plates and limited cutlery means the dishwasher needs to go on after every meal. At one point we had a few friends pop round but there was not even one plate each. I got the feeling that the owners didn't really want people in their cottage as there were about 20 little notes all round the cottage, giving various instructions. I can see the merit for some but others like telling you how to open a blind, reminding you to close the shower door, or why the freezer might rattle, were a bit unnecessary. Two little points which the owners perhaps can't easily fix is that there is no parking and it can be very difficult to park near the cottage during the day. Early morning and after about 5pm it is fine. Unlikely to be a reality but a residents parking system with a pass to put in the window would solve this. The walls feel rather thin so sound does carry around the cottage. WiFi is not great for obv reasons, but does the basics and just about powered Netflix. No mobile signal at all in the area.

I have used sykes many times for a doggy friendly cottage across the UK and every time I have been extremely satisfied with the property.

As we have had such lovely places in the past and sadly unable to afford a foreign holiday this year I thought I would pay a little more and go for a premium property. As the property cost almost £700 I expected it to be perfect I certainly expected EXACTLY what was promised and although the cottage was very beautiful and incredibly well positioned it was advertised as a dog friendly property with a fully enclosed garden , the pictures even showed a garden with a fence all the way around but this was very misleading! There were a number of things that although very minor to resolve impacted greatly on my holiday. The enclosed garden that was shown only had a fence on 2 sides meaning my dogs if off the lead could get out and get into the local woodland or on the main road but also the drive was shared and other vehicles came down so if I let them off lead they could have been hit I was FURIOUS this was the case and even more irritated that each morning when I normally let them out for a wee I had to put there collars on and a long lead and go outside myself and wait in the rain instead of just leaving them in the secure garden as it was anything but. I also thought it bizarre that as its advertised as a dog friendly cottage the property had creme carpets downstairs, how are you supposed to keep the carpets clean with muddy dogs? All in all despite the property being very attractive the lack of a SECURE enclosed garden as PROMISED was a disaster and ruined my holiday, all the property owner needs do is put a fence on the other two sides and a gate or a farmers gate on the drive way. I doubt sykes will contact me about this feedback but I would like some form of apology.

Wonderful Stay at Tispy Bee We recently had the pleasure of staying at the stylish and relaxing Tispy Bee, fantastically located in the heart of the Lake District.

Credit to the owners for the wonderful design and amenities that made our stay so comfortable. The cottage’s decor is both chic and cozy, and we especially appreciated the comfy beds and sofa after all of our walks and climbing! The house is well-equipped with plenty of plates, cups, glasses, and more, ensuring we had everything we needed. The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful Lakes. It’s just a short walk into picturesque Bowness, which boasts some fantastic bars and restaurants. A bit further, Windermere also offers great places to eat and drink. We are an active couple with a four legged friend and enjoyed a lot of great hikes and treks all with a starting point of the Tipsy bee. A walk we would highly recommend is the to Wray Castle you can cross the Ferry for £1.10 down at the marina and is a round trip of 19km. We also summited Scarfel Pike, we drove to the car park in Wasdale it was around an hours drive but a very scenic route and well worth the walk. During our stay, our favorite place to eat was Porto, where we enjoyed a lovely table on their idyllic terrace. For lighter bites during the day, we loved Home Ground in Windermere, which offers great brunch and lunch options; you may have to queue, but it’s worth the wait. Another top find was the gorgeous outdoor terrace at Craig Manor. We enjoyed a cocktail on the newly refurbished terrace, although the kitchen closing at 2:30 pm was a slight drawback. Overall, our stay at Tispy Bee was simply wonderful, thanks to the thoughtful design and amenities provided by the owners.

    Eagle Farm House was gorgeous.

A beautiful house wonderfully restored. The location, right under Helvellyn, was glorious. The kitchen space is fabulous and so we barely used the gorgeous lounge at all. Observations that might improve the overall experience; The instructions were very limited, when we found them tucked amongst some recipe books and it would be great to have a bit more info about the house, how to work things. Where to eat where to walk but we did figure all this out. We enjoyed sitting outside in the glorious garden but there was a regular smell of sewerage which seemed to emanate from the river, and given the similar and corresponding smell further up the river from the campsite toilets we wondered whether there might be an issue with their plumbing. The same smell did back up via the shower/toilet ? in the Jack and Jill bathroom. The house was cosy generally although it might have been good to have a working towel rail to dry towels. Final comment is to suggest eye masks for those who struggle to sleep without darkness as the bedrooms have skylights that are not covered in anyway. I improvised by tying a pair of tights around my head !!! Overall, it was a perfect spot and we had a wonderful holiday. Thank you.

The cottage is beautiful and in a lovely location.

Unfortunately our arrival was marred by the fact that we had our 4 large mountain bikes with us and had chosen the property because it said it had lockable storage for bikes and boats. On arrival there was no key for the garage and after a number of phone calls we were told that there was no access to the listed storage after all. This was extremely disappointing and annoying. We had to keep two bikes outdoors and two in the hall which meant we couldn't light the wood burner to dry our clothing. That aside, the cottage is very nice and beautifully finished, lovely furnishings and very cosy and warm. The electric gate is extremely temperamental and often wouldn't open or shut when we wanted it to. Also nowhere to dry clothes other than a tumble dryer. But the Aga was great, the wood burners easy to use, the wine cellar very welcome, the view / sound of the beck was fabulous and the beds were comfy. The huge bath was a real bonus too. Overall a lovely cottage and one we would return to, but only if we didn't have our bikes with us!
